Notes/Description : Kamasutra of Vatsyayana or Mallinaga with the commentary called Jayamarigala by Yasodhara otherwise called Gurudattendrapada.Mallinaga, the author of the Kamasutra is quoted in Vasavadatta, and also by Bhavabhuti in his Malatimadhava. According to Winternltz, Geschichte, III. p. 540, f. n. 3 and 4, Kamasutra is younger than Kautilya’s Arthas’astra and probably originated in the fourth century A. D Yas’odhara, or Gurudattendrapada, the author of the commentary must have lived before the 13th century A.D., since the original of tile present MS. was written for being deposited in the royal library of King Visaldeva of the Calukya line ( 1243-61 A. D. ). See below and S. R. Bhandarkar, Report, II. p. 48, where-8 similar MS. is mentioned. According to Jacobi, S. B. E., vol. XXII. p. 282, note, Jayamangala of Yas’odhara is quoted in his commentary on the Kalpasutra by Jinaprbha, who wrote it in 1307 A. D. Pandit Guleri in Ind. Anti., XLII. P- 202, tries to show that S'ankararaya, the author of the Jayamarigala on Kamandakiyanitisara. was also the author of this Jayamarigala and Yas'odhara only arranged it prOper-ly and edited Yas'odhara only arranged it prOper-ly and edited the same. The word ‘elcatrakrtasutrabhasyayam in the colophon in the colophons lends some support t0 this theory. Yas'odbara wrote the commentary during the separation from his wife.
