Notes/Description : Madhavanidana is the famous work on Pathology or Nidana, by Madhavakara, son of Indukara. It is regarded as the highest authority in Pathology by Indian Physicians. It is otherwise called Runvinis’caya or Gadavinis’caya and was one of the sources of Vrnda's Vrndamadhava.Hoernle, Osteology, pp. 11-14, however, seems to hold that Vrnda and Madhava are identical. Jolly, Medicine, pp. 6-7, differentiates between the two. Thakore Saheb 0f Gondal, History of Aryan Medical Science, ch.II. p. 35, identifies him with Madhavacarya, the author of Sarvadars’anasangraha and brother of Sayanacarya. This does not appear probable if we grant that Badan or Yedan, a work on Pathology, translated into Arabic by the order of Harun-Al-Rasid, is the same as our Madhavanidana, in which case, it cannot be later than the 7th century A. D.; cf. Mukhopadhyaya, Surgical Instruments, I. p. 29. Both Hoernle and Jolly fix the date of the work at about the 7th or 8th century. Another reason for giving up the identity of our Madhava with Madhavacarya is that Vacaspati, the author of Atankadarpana, a commentary on Madhavanidana, lived towards the close of the 12th century, since his brother Rais’arma lived at the court of Muhamed Ghori ( 1186-1206 A. D.) ; see next number. For other MSS., cf. I. 0., Nos. 2662-70 ; Bod. Cata., Nos. 745-7 ; 851; Bik., p. 648.
