Jainendravyakarana is usually ascribed to Jainendra, but was actually composed by Pujyapada whose another name was Devanandin.Pujyapada was also the author of a commentary called Sarvarthasiddhi on the Tatwarthasutra and lived in S’ake 651 according to an inscription at Laksmes’wara; see Fleet, Ind. Anti., vol. VII-p.112 ; Pathaka, Ind. Anti, vol. XII. p. 19; Peterson, Reports, II. pp. 67-74. According to Bhandarkar, Early History of the Deccan, 2nd edi. p. 59, Pujyapada lived about 678 A. D.; B. L. rice (J. R. A. S., 1890, p. 245. ), however, is inclined to place him about the middle of the 5th century A. D. See also Belwalkar, Systems of Grammar, pp. 62-68. For a description of the work, see Kielhorn, Ind. Anti., vol. X. p. 75. Somadeo in 1205 A.D. wrote a commentary called S’abdarnavacandrika on the work. The work is published with the commentary of Abhayanandi in Pandit, new series, vols. 31-34. The probable date of Abhayanandi is 750 A. D. according to Dr. Belwalkar. For other MSS., see Weber, II. p. 201. Mitra, Notices, VII-p. 185; Peter. VI-p. 143, No. 90; Buhler, VI. Nos. 589-91; Bhandar., V-Nos. 1139-40; VI-Nos. 1055, 1059 &c. A Madhya-Jainendra-Vyakarana by Somes'vara is mentioned at ‘the Catalogue of Sanskrt MSS. in the Private Libraries of the North-Western Provinces, part VII. p. 68 a part of the third. The MS. contains two of the five adhyayas and a part of the third. It will be seen that the author skilfully introduces his name in the first verse. |
