Caranavyuha, a catalogue of the vedic schools, is counted as the fifth Paris’ista of the White Yajurveda. It is ascribed to Katyayana in this MS. and to S'aunaka (this is concluded from the words‘Namas S’aunakaya’ occurring in them) in the next two. Edited by Weber, Ind. Stud.,III. p. 247 ff.The present MS. agrees with the MS. D of Weber, the text of which is followed by hm in the edition, except in the second chapter where it follows the order of ABC, by placing sec. 23 between 17 and 18.The next two MSS. ( Nos. 486-87 ) appear to contain the recension known to Ramakrsna, the author of a commentary on the Paraskara Grhya Sutra; cf. ibid, p. 250.I give below a detailed description of this recension:—In ch. I, after see. 5 we get the following additional verses :—In ch. II, we get the following order of sections :—10-13; 15; 17 (only the first sentence); 19( with the reading of Ramakrsna noticed by Weber, p. 265, line 9, according to which there are 17 divisions instead of 15 of other MSS.);17 (only the last sentence प्रतिपदं &c. ); 23 (with उपज्योतिषं साङ्गलक्षणं प्रतिज्ञानुवाक्य: in the place of तत्र परिशिष्टानि भवन्ति I यूपलक्षणं छालक्षणं प्रतिज्ञा० &c); 21 ( व्दे सहस्त्रे० I इत्युत्कं परिसंख्यातमेतत्सकलं शुक्रियम् I ग्रन्थाश्र्चापरिसंख्याता ब्राह्मणं च चतुर्गुणं in No. 487 and these same three lines with the following two additional ones :- वेदावारभ्य पूर्वे तं ब्रह्मव्याहृतिपूर्वकम् I वेदमध्यारभेधेयं अोमान्तं च विसर्जयेत् I in No. 486); 25 (with the reading of Ramakrsna);18; 20; 26 (without the word सौत्किकं ). I have not noticed minor variants. In ch. III, we have :—sec. 28; then the passage आसुरायणीया.....जैमिनीयाश्र्चेति quoted as Ramakrsna’s reading on p. 274 by Weber and then sec. 34.The commentator remarks (in No. 487 ) that out of the 16 S’akhas of the Samaveda, only three are extent, these being Kauthumi in
Gujrat, Jaimini in Karanatak and Jaiminiya in Maharastra. In ch. IV, the order of the sections is as follows :—35 (with Ramakrsna’s reading given on p. 278, line 5 by Weber); 37 (with the reading of Ramakrsna given on p. 279, line 17 by Weber, the 3rd kalpa being विधिविधान 'and not विविधान) then sections 38; 44; 40-43;45 and 46, with slight changes of readings here and there. The work thus appears to be in several recensions which, however, I believe, are not to be connected with the particular Vedas. Also cf.Bod., No. 1048 and I. O., No. 227. |
