Notes/Description : A Thale MS; see above No. 440.Gopalakarika is a collection of verses on the Vedic Ritual composed by Gopala. Gopala is a very ancient writer; he is quoted by Narayana,the Prayogakara, who is mentioned by Kes’avasvami in his Prayogasara (No. 612 below); see the next number. He therefore, cannot be later than the 10th century. Gopala quotes Bhavasvami, who must be still older.Our MS. contains 265 Karikas on the Soma rites. I. O., No. 440 is a MS. of another part of Gopala's Karikas, containing 420 Karikas.In the Bhadakamakara Memorial Collection of MSS., belonging to the Bhadakamakara Hastalikhita Gopala seems to have written commentaries on the Apastamba (C. C. I. p. 160b), Katyayana and Baudhayana S’rautasutras. For a portion of the last (on Prayascitta only; see No.525 above) commentary, cf. I. He is called Prayas’cittavaiyasikyanusari by Vis'vanatha;see below No. 621.Sangrahaka Mandala, which is recently started by me at the Wilson College, there is a MS. of Gopala’s Karikas from the beginning upto the end of the Caturmasya.
