Adhyayas I to IV of the Kas’ika Vrtti, on Panini’s Astadhyayi, by Vamana and Jayapida. For the joint authorship, see Buhler’s Report, No. VI. p. 72; Bhandarkar, Report, 1883-84, p. 57. “On a review of the whole available evidence it appears clear that the author of the first five chapters was Jayaditya and of the last three Vamana”. Itsing, the Chinese traveller, mentions Jayaditya as the author of Kas’ika and not Vamana. Itsing wrote his chronicle in 691 A. D. It is quite probable that Vamana long afterwards completed the commentary which was left incomplete by Jayapida. It is thus not necessary to give up the identity of this Vamana and the Vamana of Kavyalankara. Winternitz, however, thinks otherwise, and is inclined to differentiate between Vamana the grammarian and Vamana the alankarist; see his Geschichte, III. p. 393, f. n.; for other MSS., see I. O., Nos. 591-592. |
